Window screens take a beating in the Santa Clarita Valley. Hot summers, strong sun, and seasonal winds all wear down mesh and frames over time. The good news is that most damaged screens can be repaired or rebuilt without replacing the window. Here’s how to tell what your screens need.
Signs Your Window Screens Need Attention
- Holes or tears in the mesh. Even small holes let insects in and tend to grow.
- Brittle or faded mesh. Sun exposure breaks mesh down over the years. If it cracks or crumbles when you press it, it’s time to rescreen.
- Bent or warped frames. A bent frame leaves gaps around the edges and won’t sit tight in the window.
- Loose spline. If the mesh is pulling out of the frame, the rubber spline holding it in has worn out.
- Missing screens. Screens often go missing after window replacements, painting, or moves.
- Broken corners or pull tabs. These make screens hard to remove and reinstall.
Repair vs. Replace
Repair (rescreen) when
- The frame is straight and solid
- Only the mesh or spline is damaged
- You want to upgrade the mesh type on an existing frame
Replace (build new) when
- The frame is bent, cracked, or corroded
- The screen is missing entirely
- Corners and hardware are broken
Mesh Options Worth Knowing About
- Standard fiberglass: The everyday choice. Good visibility and airflow.
- Pet-resistant mesh: Much tougher. Holds up to claws and paws.
- Solar screen: Blocks a large share of sun and heat, which helps on west-facing windows in the summer. See our solar screen page.
