Fresh air when you want it. An invisible doorway when you don’t.
A StowAway retractable screen gives you a full screen door that disappears into a slim housing when you’re done with it. People call them invisible screen doors for good reason β no swinging door in the way, no sagging frame, no view blocked by mesh you look at year-round. Pull it across when you want the breeze, let it retract when you don’t.
Golden State Screen measures, orders, and installs StowAway retractable screens throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. We come to you β there’s no showroom trip and no guessing at dimensions. Every unit is built to your exact opening.
How a StowAway Retractable Screen Works
The screen mesh rolls onto a spring-loaded cassette mounted along the side of your door jamb. You draw the handle across the opening, and it latches into a strike on the opposite side. Release it and a speed-controlled retraction pulls the mesh smoothly back into the housing β no snapping, no slamming.
Because the whole assembly tucks into the jamb, a StowAway doesn’t change how your entry looks when it’s retracted. Finished to match your existing trim, most people don’t notice it’s there.
Made in California, Built to Your Opening
StowAway screens are fabricated in Anaheim Hills, California β about an hour from us. That matters for two reasons:
- Short lead times. Units are made to order and typically ship within a few business days, not weeks.
- Real service after the sale. Replacement parts and warranty components come from a factory we can drive to, not from across the country.
Every screen is cut to the measurements we take at your home. There are no stock sizes and no filler strips.
Fits Nearly Any Door
We install StowAway retractable screens on:
- Single entry doors β in-swing or out-swing
- French doors β double units that meet in the center
- Sliding glass doors β including single-panel and French sliders
- Single-over-double doors
- Dutch doors
- Arched and radius-top doors
- Juliet balcony doors
- Extra-wide openings β compacting double units
- Windows β pull-down and side-to-side configurations
Size range: a single unit covers openings up to 84″ wide and 108″ tall. A double unit spans up to 168″ wide and 108″ tall. Anything larger than that moves into our large opening retractable screen systems.
19 Colors, 8 Mesh Options, and a Dozen Upgrades
You’re not picking from three colors and one mesh. StowAway is built to disappear into your specific entry, and the options list is where that happens.
Finishes
Nineteen standard finishes across three families β powder coated, wood veneer, and anodized β plus custom color matching if none of the standards work. The wood veneer option is worth knowing about if you have stained wood entry doors and don’t want a painted aluminum housing next to them.
Mesh
Eight mesh choices. The three we recommend most often in the SCV:
- Standard insect mesh β maximum airflow and the clearest view
- Pet-resistant mesh β heavier weave for dogs and cats that lean on screens
- Solar mesh β cuts heat gain and glare on west- and south-facing doors, which matters here more than it does at the coast
Hardware and Upgrades
- Die-cast aluminum handle (standard on every unit)
- Recessed handle option for tight jambs
- Locks and latches
- Pet guards to protect the lower mesh
- Speed reducer for controlled retraction
- Internal magnets for a positive close
- Position holders and grabber catches
- Cleaning kits
We bring finish and mesh samples to the estimate so you can hold them up against your actual door instead of guessing from a photo.
Warranty
StowAway retractable screen doors carry a limited lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, covering the original purchaser for as long as they own the home. A few things worth knowing up front, because we’d rather you hear them from us than find out later:
- The mesh itself isn’t covered. The warranty applies to the housing, roller, and hardware. Rips, tears, and fraying in the screen material are normal wear β and we rescreen them affordably.
- It covers parts, not labor. Service calls, removal, and installation of warranty parts aren’t included.
- It transfers to nobody. The warranty ends if you sell the house.
- Professional installation is required. The manufacturer voids the warranty on owner-installed or owner-modified units. That’s part of why we install every screen we sell.
A retractable screen is not a security door
Worth saying plainly: StowAway screens are built for ventilation, insect control, and sun reduction. They aren’t designed to keep intruders out, and they won’t hold in a determined dog or a small child. If that’s what you need, take a look at our security screen doors instead β or run both, which plenty of our customers do.
What to Expect
- Free on-site estimate. We come to your home, look at the actual door, and take precise measurements. We’ll show you finish and mesh samples on the spot.
- Made to order. Your unit is built to your dimensions at the factory.
- Professional installation. We mount the housing, set the latch strike, adjust retraction speed, and test the operation with you before we leave. This is also what keeps your manufacturer warranty intact.
- Service when you need it. We rescreen and repair retractable doors we’ve installed β and ones we haven’t.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a StowAway screen work on my French doors?
Yes. A double unit mounts on both jambs and the two screens meet in the center with a magnetic closure. This is one of the most common installs we do.
Can I still use my door normally?
Yes. The screen retracts fully into its housing, so your door swings or slides exactly as it did before.
I have dogs. Will they wreck it?
Pet damage is the most common reason retractable screens need service, and it’s specifically excluded from the manufacturer warranty. Two upgrades handle it: pet-resistant mesh, which uses a heavier weave, and a pet guard that shields the lower portion of the screen. We’d recommend at least one of them if you have a dog that pushes at doors. Note that a swinging pet door flap can’t be built into retractable mesh β for that you’d want a hinged or sliding screen door with a pet door installed, or a pet guard on an existing screen.
What happens if the mesh gets damaged?
The screen can be rescreened without replacing the housing or hardware. Mesh isn’t covered under the lifetime warranty, but a rescreen costs a fraction of a new unit and we handle them throughout the SCV.
Can I install one myself?
The manufacturer requires installation by a certified dealer, and self-installing or modifying a unit voids the lifetime warranty. Retractable screens also need the housing set plumb and the strike aligned precisely, or the screen drags and the roller wears out early.
How long does installation take?
Most single-door installs take under an hour. French doors and sliders take a bit longer.
Do you charge for the estimate?
No. Estimates are free anywhere in the Santa Clarita Valley.
