Large-opening retractable screens are made for the wide glass doors that standard screen doors can’t cover: bi-fold doors, multi-slide and stacking doors, and lift-and-slide systems. Pull the screen across to let in fresh air without bugs, then let it retract into a slim housing so your view stays open.
Golden State Screen installs the two leading systems, Phantom XL and Wizard VistaView Plus, across the Santa Clarita Valley and throughout Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Here’s how they compare and how to choose.
Which Doors Need a Large-Opening Screen?
- Bi-fold and folding glass walls
- Multi-slide and stacking door systems
- Lift-and-slide doors
- Wide French doors and oversized patio doors
- Corner openings and large window walls
If your opening is wider than a standard double door, or your doors fold or stack out of the way, a regular sliding screen door won’t work. A large-opening retractable screen will.
How They Work
Both systems use a screen that rolls into a housing on the side of the opening and travels along a top and bottom track. Wider openings use two screens that meet in the middle. Both let you stop the screen partway, so you can screen just the section you walk through.
Phantom XL vs. Wizard VistaView Plus
| Phantom XL | Wizard VistaView Plus | |
|---|---|---|
| Max width, single screen | 12 ft | 15 ft |
| Max width, double system | 24 ft | 30 ft |
| Max height | 12 ft | 12 ft |
| Stopping partway | Customizable stopping points | Patented auto-brake stops anywhere |
| Threshold | Bottom track | Optional low-profile bottom track |
| Operation | Manual | Manual |
Both are premium, custom-built systems. The right choice comes down to your opening, not the brand.
How to Choose
- Opening width — very wide spans may call for a double system that meets in the center.
- How your doors move — where the glass panels fold or stack affects where the housing can go.
- Threshold — if you want the smoothest step-over, ask about a low-profile track.
- Look — frame colors and housing styles differ, and we’ll bring options to compare.
- Manual or motorized — for patios or openings too tall or wide to pull by hand, see our motorized patio screens guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a large-opening retractable screen?
It is a retractable screen built for oversized doors like bi-fold, multi-slide, stacking, and lift-and-slide systems. It pulls across the opening when you want fresh air without bugs and retracts into a slim housing when you don’t.
How wide can a large-opening retractable screen go?
Phantom XL covers up to 12 feet wide with a single screen or 24 feet wide with a double system, up to 12 feet high. Wizard VistaView Plus covers up to 15 feet wide with a single screen or 30 feet wide with a double system, up to 12 feet tall.
Can I stop the screen partway across the opening?
Yes. Phantom XL has customizable stopping points along the track, and VistaView Plus uses a patented auto-brake that holds the screen wherever you let go.
Is Phantom XL or Wizard VistaView Plus better?
Both are built for large openings. The right one depends on your opening’s width, how your doors fold or stack, and the look you want at the threshold. We install both and recommend one after measuring.
Do large-opening screens need a motor?
No. Phantom XL and VistaView Plus are pulled across by hand. If you want push-button control or sun and wind sensors, a motorized screen is the better fit.
Do you install large-opening screens outside the Santa Clarita Valley?
Yes. We install new large-opening retractable screens throughout Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
