Phantom and StowAway are two of the retractable screen brands we install most. Both give you a full screen door that disappears when you’re not using it, and both are custom-built to your exact opening. The differences come down to how they latch, the finishes and options you want, and the shape and size of your doorway.
What They Have in Common
- The screen rolls into a slim housing beside the door and retracts when you’re done.
- Each screen is built to the measurements we take at your home. No stock sizes.
- Both work on single doors, French doors, and sliding glass doors.
- Both offer color and mesh options so the screen blends into your entry.
Phantom Retractable Screens
Phantom is known for its handle options. It is the only retractable door screen with an optional integrated latch-and-release handle, which is quiet to use and secure from accidental openings. You can also choose the original Phantom magnetic latching system.
- Latch-and-release handle or magnetic latch
- Signature colors, custom color matching, and woodgrain
- Mesh options for insects, shade, and privacy
- For French doors, a screen mounts on each side and the two meet in the center
Phantom also makes Phantom XL for oversized openings and motorized screens for patios, so it is a good fit if you want one family of products across several openings. Golden State Screen is an authorized Phantom dealer.
StowAway Retractable Screens
StowAway uses a spring-loaded cassette that tucks into the door jamb, with speed-controlled retraction so the screen glides back instead of snapping. StowAway screens are made in Anaheim Hills, California, so units typically ship within a few business days and replacement parts are close by.
- 19 standard finishes across powder coated, wood veneer, and anodized, plus custom color matching
- 8 mesh options
- Fits Dutch doors, arched and radius-top doors, Juliet balcony doors, and windows
- A single unit covers openings up to 84″ wide and 108″ tall; a double unit up to 168″ wide

How to Choose
- You want a latching handle that stays put: Phantom’s latch-and-release handle.
- You have an unusual door like a Dutch door or an arched top: StowAway.
- You want an exact color or wood look: both offer custom matching; we’ll show you samples.
- You want it installed soon: StowAway’s California factory usually means a short lead time.
- Your opening is very wide or a folding glass wall: look at Phantom XL or Wizard large-opening systems.
One note for pet owners: retractable screens use lighter mesh than a traditional screen door and aren’t built for a lot of scratching or pushing. If you have an active dog, read our guide to pet-friendly screen doors.
