You built the patio to live on. Then the 4 p.m. sun hits it, the gnats show up at dinner, and everyone heads back inside.
Phantom Motorized Screens fix that. Press a button and a custom screen lowers across your patio, pergola, or wall of glass. Press it again and it rolls up into a slim housing and disappears, so your view is back the way you designed it.
At Golden State Screen, we measure, order, and install Phantom Motorized Screens for homes across Los Angeles and Ventura County. Here’s what they are, where they work best, and how to tell if one is right for your home.
What Are Phantom Motorized Screens?
Phantom Motorized Screens are custom-made retractable screens that roll down vertically from a housing mounted above your opening. A quiet Somfy motor does the work, and side tracks or a cable guide system keep the screen straight and secure.
Each screen is built to your exact opening, up to 40′ wide. Phantom has been manufacturing retractable screens since 1992, and their motorized line is the go-to choice for openings too big for a standard screen door.
- Appears when you want it. Lower it for bugs, sun, or privacy.
- Disappears when you don’t. It retracts fully out of sight.
- Fits the house. The housing can be recessed into the structure or surface-mounted, and frames come in standard colors or a custom color match.
The motor lives in the housing above the opening. Side tracks guide the screen down and hold it steady, and your remote, switch, sensors, or phone tell it when to move.
Where They Work Best
If the opening is too big for a regular screen door, a motorized screen is usually the answer. Common spots we see across LA, Ventura, and Santa Barbara County:
- Covered patios and alumawood or wood patio covers. Turn an open patio into a screened outdoor room.
- Pergolas and outdoor kitchens. Keep bugs off the grill and out of the food.
- Multi-slide, lift-and-slide, and bifold door systems. Open the whole wall without letting the yard in.
- Large picture windows and walls of glass. Cut glare and heat without curtains.
- Pool cabanas and casitas. Add shade and privacy on demand.
- Garages and workshops. Air flow without the flies.
Built for Southern California Weather
Southern California is hard on outdoor spaces. Motorized screens are built for exactly what we deal with here.
Summer heat and afternoon sun. West-facing patios from Santa Clarita and the San Fernando Valley to Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks can be unusable from mid-afternoon until sunset. A solar mesh screen blocks much of the sun’s heat and glare before it reaches your patio or windows, keeping the space and your house cooler. It also helps protect furniture, cushions, and flooring from fading.
Santa Ana winds. Add an optional wind sensor and the screen can retract on its own when gusts pick up, even if nobody’s home.
Bugs. Mosquitoes, gnats, and flies love summer evenings as much as we do. Lower the screens at dinner and keep eating outside.
Controls, Mesh, and Finish Options
Controls. Phantom partners with Somfy for the motors, remotes, and sensors. Choose from:
- A handheld remote
- A wall switch
- Sun and wind sensors that raise or lower the screen automatically
- Smart home integration with systems like Lutron, Crestron, and smartphone control
One remote or switch can run a single screen or a whole group of them.
Mesh. Pick the mesh for the job: insect mesh for bugs and airflow, solar mesh for heat and glare, or a tighter privacy mesh for neighbors who are a little too close. We’ll bring samples so you can see the view through each one.
Finish. The housing and tracks come in standard colors, or Phantom can custom-match your trim, stucco, or patio cover. Recessed installs hide the housing in the ceiling or beam so it’s barely visible.
Motorized or Manual: Which Do You Need?
Not every opening needs a motor. Here’s the quick way to decide.
Standard single and French doors get Phantom Legacy Retractable Screen Doors. Wide doors you open by hand get a Phantom XL or Wizard Vista View oversized screen. Patios, pergolas, walls of glass, and anything you want at the push of a button get Phantom Motorized Screens.

See Them in Person Before You Decide
A motorized screen is a bigger investment, and it helps to see one run. For large-opening and motorized projects, we can set up a private showroom visit by appointment. You’ll see the screens raise and lower, compare mesh up close, and look at frame colors in real light.

Frequently Asked Questions
How wide can a Phantom Motorized Screen go?
Up to 40′ wide. Every screen is custom-built to your opening.
What happens when the Santa Anas kick up?
With an optional wind sensor, the screen retracts automatically in high wind. Without one, just raise it with the remote.
Can I control them from my phone?
Yes. Phantom Motorized Screens work with most home automation systems, including Lutron, Crestron, and smartphone control.
Do they need power?
Yes, the motor needs a power source near the housing. We’ll look at your setup and talk through power during the estimate.
Will I see the housing when the screen is up?
On a recessed install, the housing hides in the structure and you’ll barely notice it. Surface-mounted housings are slim and color-matched to your home.
